Although different versions of Poker
will have a certain specific strategy that applies solely
to that game, certain basic themes and ideas are universal
to them all.
A good understanding of the basic tips that follow
will be useful no matter what variation is being played.
1. Be selective
When faced with a large number of players in a single
game, there is good chance that at least one of them
will hold an exceptional hand. If you decide to play
every one of these hands do not expect to be a winner
in the long run.
2. Play aggressively
Poker is not a game for the passive and indecisive and
if you intend to play, play to win. If you consistently
fail to bet, an opponent who may otherwise have thrown
down their hand if you had have betted, may win with
a lesser hand than that which you may have had. If you
only bet when you receive a good hand, your opponents
will recognise this and know not to bet against you.
3. Bluff (sometimes)
An expansion of the previous point, if you never bluff,
your opponents will quickly realise your method of play
i.e., that you are not prepared to bet unless you have
a good hand.
4. Vary your strategy according to your opponents
The people you play against can make a critical difference
in determining whether you emerge a winner. For instance,
if you play against someone who you know to be a consistent
bluffer, you should be prepared to call with relatively
weak hands. Conversely, if you play against someone
who bets only on a strong hand, you should be more inclined
to throw down your cards.
