In simple terms, the object of Poker
is to win the money in the pot, via a combination of
luck and wise play. The pot can be claimed in one of
two ways. The first and most reliable is by having a
combination of winning cards. The second is through
bluffing ie, convincing other players that you hold
the winning hand by playing boldly.
Although the exact betting procedures may vary, a poker
hand is normally begun by each player placing an equal
opening stake into the pot. This is known as the Ante.
Depending on which rules the game is being played by,
the alternative is to place Blind Stakes. If Blinds
are used, one or more players will be designated to
place a bet before receiving any cards. Blinds are usually
rotated around the table so everyone ends up paying
their fair share.
During a hand, players may raise the bet after each
round of cards is dealt. If at any time a player wishes
to discontinue a particular hand, they may return their
cards to the dealer. This action means they no longer
stand a chance of winning the pot’s contents and
is commonly known as folding. If no other player equals
the previous bets or raises, the player who placed the
bet wins the pot.
These basic rules are what makes Poker an enjoyable
and accessible game that many will continue to play
throughout their lives – some very seriously –
but most for the sheer enjoyment of it.
