In draw Poker, after an ante, each player is dealt five cards. The player to the left of the dealer acts first and either checks or opens the betting. Play proceeds clockwise, with each player acting in turn.

Once a bet has been made, the next player has the option of folding, calling the previous bet, or raising. If no bet has been made, the player may check or open the betting.

There may or may not be minimum initial requirements to open the hand. If not, the game is called guts. If a pair of jacks or better is required to open, the game is called jackpots, or “jacks of better”, or more simply jacks.

If the hand is not opened, players re-ante and the deal is repeated. As soon as the hand is opened, a round of betting occurs, and those calling the opening round bets may then in sequence discard from their hands and draw up to three replacement cards from the un-dealt deck to form their final hand.

After the draw there is a second round of betting, with the opener betting or checking first, and the best hand among those who call the second round bets is the winner.
