The majority of Poker games use five cards to define the winning hand. In a fifty-two card deck, the amount of different hands that it is possible to receive is a staggering 2.6 miliion.

In seven-card stud, there is a better chance of more players receiving hands worth betting on than there is in draw. Choosing ones five card hand from among a greater number of cards not only gives a psychological advantage of higher ranked cards to play with, but also of preserving probabilities for improving hands that are not currently good enough to win.

This means that more players can legitimately stay in the hand in the early rounds to see the cards in later rounds, and this will increase the size of the pot and lead to a larger number of contested hands.
