Widow games

The key feature of widow games is that the open cards (or, common cards) are not the exclusive property of a particular player but are part of each player’s hand.

In Texas hold-em each player is dealt two down cards, followed by a round of betting. The first three common cards (the flop) are then dealt face up, followed by a second betting round.

Subsequently, two more common cards are exposed (on the turn, and on the river), each one followed by a betting round. The players hand may be taken from any five of the seven cards available to him – his two down cards and the five cards in the widow.

In Omaha the common cards are dealt in the same manner as in hold-em. The differences are, first, that the initial deal is four cards to each player, and, second that the players hand, though based on the nine cards available to him, is constrained: it must consist of exactly two from his down cards and three from the widow.
