Again, this area relates mainly to playing
conditions not found online ie, playing in a casino
or with friends.
Although a pleasurable pastime, the enjoyment of Poker
can be marred when the game does not run smoothly and
quickly. Whilst this responsibility usually lies with
the dealer, there are certain things a player can do
to help keep the game running in an orderly fashion.
What follows is a list of what may be expected of a
player in terms of etiquette.
1. Wait your turn
Whatever moves are made during a game, they must all
be made in a clockwise direction, one player at a time.
Not only does acting out of turn show a lack of regard
for propriety, it may give a player an unfair advantage
over their remaining opponents. For instance, by placing
a bet before it is your turn to do so, you have unwittingly
indicated to a player your intentions, thereby allowing
them to base their subsequent playing decisions on the
inside information you have given them.
2. Don’t ‘splash’ the pot
Splashing the pot is the term is the term given to when
a player throws their stake into the pot instead of
placing it. If the pot is splashed in a casino, the
dealer may dealer may deem it necessary to interrupt
play in order to count the pot’s contents. The
correct way to make a bet is to place it in front of
you so the dealer can check its accuracy. It will then
be added to the rest of the chips on the table.
3. Do not string bet or raise
A string bet is an illegal play that occurs when the
player places less than the full raise into the pot
and returns to their chips to make up the difference.
Because an unscrupulous player can use this kind of
move to their advantage, it is a prohibited play.
4. Do not discuss your hand during play
A sure way to provide other players with an unfair advantage
is by discussing your cards. For instance, if you abandon
your cards and then remark, “I just threw away
an ace and a king, a player also holding one of these
two cards may choose not to enter the pot with a hand
they may otherwise have played.
