There are few Poker playing pleasures
as great as making a huge bet when you know you’re
outgunned and watching everyone fold.
If all Poker players only called or bet when the probability
of their holding the winning hand exceeded the pot odds
in their favour, Poker would be a much more predictable
and less enjoyable game than it is, for you could correctly
estimate the quality of other players hands, purely
from the size of their bet.
Thankfully, all players, both good and bad, often bet
when they have poor prospects, and fail to do so when
they have strong hands, as part of the deception that
is an integral part of the game. Bluffing i.e., betting
heavily when you know that you do not hold the best
hand in order to make other players fold, is a key aspect
of this deception.
Knowing when to bluff is a complex question, for the
answer depends not only on the outcome of the individual
hand but in the dynamics of the game. It is here that
playing in accordance with your opponents is crucial.
If playing against someone who frequently calls then
it may be wise not to bluff. On the other hand, if playing
against someone who either lacking in funds or is easily
intimidated, bluffing can be a lucrative move.
