The most obvious way in which illegal information is gathered is through the use of marked cards.

Marking is of two general types:

One is in the prepared deck in which the backs or sides of cards have been tampered with in order to reveal their face identities to anyone who knows the code. Marking can be done through bending, bleaching, shaving and inking. It is even possible to buy pre-marked cards at various magic stores. Avoiding uncommon brands is a defence against this.

The second form of marking is the type done by a player at a table who marks key cards during the course of play using his fingernails, or a pin concealed in a ring or bandage, or a hidden source of ink. In some cases, merely bending key cards can be enough to make them stand out from the rest.
