Whenever you decide to do more than simply call passively or make the standard bet, you should bear three different objectives in mind. Remember that these objectives can often be in conflict with each other depending on the nature of the hand. They are as follows:

1. Discourage the other players from calling in order to minimise your number of opponents.

2.Increase the size of the pot by inducing other people to stay in the hand, and thereby contribute more than they otherwise would.

3.Keep the pot small by discouraging or pre-empting some larger bets.

Which of these you want to do will depend upon the quality of the hand.
