If after four cards you have been dealt a hand with excellent potential but which is also entirely beatable, your objective here should be to discourage the rest of the players from staying in for the showdown.

Through aggressive play you should exaggerate your strength and make the pot odds facing your opponents less favourable i.e., to make it to expensive for them to try to catch the cards that would beat you.

If it is your bet in the early rounds, your tactic should be to bet the maximum possible, and if it is not your bet, to raise or re-raise if others bet. The key factor is to reduce the opposition. Your chances of winning the pot are much greater against one opponent than against three, four or five.
