Since any given poker hand comes from
a selection from a fifty-two card deck, the occurrence
of any particular combination, while never certain,
can be accurately described in probability terms. For
this reason probability calculation does play a role
in Poker, but its role is far less than it might be
thought.
In basic terms, the probability of occurrence of a
repeated event is the fraction of the trials in which
it may be expected to occur. Although this may be expressed
in different ways, the most common is to say that if
there if there is one chance in five of an event occurring,
the probability of this event is said to be 0.20, or
20%.
In a Poker context, it is best to think about the odds
against an event occurring, for that, specifically,
is what one compares to the pot odds facing a player.
In poker, there are probabilities you do have to estimate,
but they are relatively few and relatively easy to estimate
with sufficient accuracy to guide your behaviour. As
a general rule, you need to know how many cards are
left that can help you to get the winning hand, how
many you have not seen (and thus are potentially available),
and how many opportunities you have to get the cards
you need.
